INTO Giving hit the wickets and raise £500 for charity

Cricket teams made up of INTO staff and University of Exeter staff, (INTO Soup-a-stars), Development & Alumni Relations (DARO Donkeys), the International Office (International Rescue), and S/J Knight Decorators (Cowboy Builders), gave up their Sunday to entertain family and friends whilst raising money for a good cause.

After 8 competitive matches, the Daro Donkeys and the INTO Soup-a-stars played in an exciting final which ended in a draw, therefore for 2012 the INTO Giving Charity Shield will share both names. The £200 prize money was split equally between INTO Giving and Cricket for Change, a charity run by a University of Exeter Alumni. Thanks to all the INTO staff who contributed in making the day a success.

New INTO CSU Centre Director welcomes first intake of students

John Didier, the newly appointed centre director of INTO Colorado State University, and his staff are in the process of welcoming 350 new international students onto campus and getting them settled into their new homes.

The new arrivals, which are the first wave of INTO students, had their first taste of campus life this week as INTO staff accompanied them on shopping trips and took them to Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest in downtown Fort Collins.

"I believe this program will greatly benefit CSU," John Didier said. "Our plan is to internationalise the campus as much as possible. I believe it will enhance the educational experience for students, faculty and staff."

In the lead up INTO CSU's inaugural intake, Elizabeth Munro, INTO's outgoing Interim Centre Director, will be working alongside John to ensure a gradual transition that will enable the INTO CSU team to concentrate on delivering the ultimate student experience before John takes full control of the centre from October 1st.

"Liz has really helped me hit the ground running at INTO CSU," John said. "I have benefited immensely from her tremendous work in establishing INTO CSU and preparing the Centre for many exciting times ahead."

One key element of the INTO CSU program is making sure international students are immersed in local culture and become an integral part of the campus community from the outset. As a result, the international students will participate alongside domestic students, parents and teaching staff in many Ram Welcome events during their Orientation.

The Ram Welcome is a CSU tradition all new students participate in and offers an in-depth look at what you can expect as a student studying at the University. These events also introduce students to many aspects of university life and provide the best opportunity to network and learn more about the many resources available on campus.

These initiatives are essential as international students now comprise 3% (approximately 1,100) of CSU's overall student body with plans to bring an additional 1,200 students onto campus over the next five years. The INTO centre and the University work closely to ensure that each student is welcomed into the local community and help as they adapt to a new life away from their home countries.

"I've had interaction with many of our international students over the years and have witnessed first-hand how welcoming our community is," said Didier, who has been at CSU the past 13 years. "We have a lot to offer here at CSU, and there's no reason not to do our best to allow students from around the world to take advantage of that."

The new students studying at INTO CSU are from 14 different countries including China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kuwait and Qatar. Both undergraduate and graduate students are included in the programme.

INTO Higher blog recognised as global resource for international study

GoAbroad, the leading online international education and experiential travel resource, have awarded the INTO Higher blog their Blog of the Week award, giving recognition to the high quality content, design and functionality of the blog, as well as giving INTO and its partner universities exposure through one of the United States' leading study abroad organisations.

The directories at GoAbroad.com contain information on international study, internships, volunteer opportunities, teaching, language schools and much more. The site receives on average 1.5million visitors each month and is used by students, study abroad advisors, faculty members and travellers from all over the world.

On the GoAbroad website, they explain why they chose to award INTO with the acclaim: "The range of posts are written by both students and INTO staff, so you know you'll be getting the best of both worlds when it comes to travel advice."

It continued by praising the efficiency of the blog's navigation, user friendliness and the resourceful links that "point to everything from a local festival to interesting travel photography."

Stacey Crosskill, Social Media Manager for INTO University Partnerships, was delighted to hear the news and recognises the influence an online resource like GoAbroad has within international study.

She said: "We have put a lot of work into making the blog a fun but informative resource for international students and we've had some great contributions from staff across the network, so it's lovely that they and the INTO centres are getting the exposure they deserve."

GoAbroad have a huge following across social media with nearly 40,000 followers on Facebook and 20,000 on Twitter as well as high volumes visiting their YouTube and Flickr accounts.

The blog is also used to drive traffic to the INTO Higher website, which displays INTO's rapidly growing network of university-based study centres, the range of courses on offer, together with information on our university partners.

The digital team had previously identified GoAborad as a resource with a high prominence on the Web that could also increase INTO's visibility through association. The positioning of the INTO Higher blog on GoAbroad is expected to increase traffic to all of INTO's consumer-facing digital platforms and allow more people to engage with its content.

Andrew Colin, Chairman for INTO University Partnerships praised the digital team and said it was "great to receive recognition for their endeavours."

Games Maker and INTO employee returns with Olympic spirit

Xin Jiang, INTO Project Analyst for the Recruitment Unit (Finance) is passionate about sport and naturally, didn’t want to miss out on the greatest sporting show on earth - the London 2012 Olympic Games. However, tickets for the event were all but gone and unless he discovered the ability to run 100 metres in less than 10 seconds, his dream of participating would be in doubt.

"I had been told about the Olympic Games Makers and heard that the organisers had received over 250,000 applications for the 70,000 positions that were available," said Xin. "I was therefore absolutely delighted when I received an invitation to interview."

Xin didn't know it yet but he - along with his colleagues - would soon become as celebrated as the athletes in recognition of the work they did on the encouraging volunteering in the UK and bringing communities together during the event.

The world's media, along with the Mayor of London and the chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Lord Sebastian Coe, proclaimed that the "Games Makers turned London 2012 from a good Games to a great Games".

Such sentiments were far from Xin's mind when he arrived for his interview at the ExCel conference centre in London's Victoria Dock back in November 2011.

"The interview was tough and far more difficult than I imagined, but I had a strong belief in my dedication and commitment to the Olympics and felt that this would make me a suitable candidate for the Games Makers."

After an agonising wait, Xin was offered the role as an Events Service Team Member, working at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich Arsenal for the shooting competition.

"Shooting was one of the first events to start and I joined a team of 200 other Games Makers for the first briefing session held in the Finals Hall. I felt huge excitement when I arrived as I knew that this was the beginning of my Olympic journey."

"We were told that we would have a different job every day, for example, checking tickets, directing spectators around the venue, helping people find their seats, and answering questions from 'how can I get a photograph with Peter Wilson' to 'do you know how I can get in contact with an Olympic shooting coach?'"

Xin Jiang, originally from China, worked alongside other Games Makers from all over the world and likened his Olympic experience to that of working for INTO.

"I love that after the Games, I can go back to work and continue engaging with people all over the world and from all walks of life. There's nothing quite like it."

Not only did Xin get the opportunity to meet some of the world's top athletes, he also witnessed China claiming their first gold medal of the London 2012 Games.

"I couldn't believe it when we [China] won! I didn't know a lot about our national shooting team but to be there when we kicked started our Games was a moment I'll never forget."

Although Xin was missed during his Olympic participation, Jeremy Histon, INTO Assistant Director (Global Recruitment), was thrilled about Xin's decision to contribute to this truly historic event.

"At INTO we're keen to promote volunteering amongst our staff, so when Xin approached me about wanting to volunteer at the Olympics, not only is it in line with INTO's values, but a once in a lifetime opportunity, I was very happy to support his participation."
