INTO Newcastle University showcase their talent!

The Guardian this week published it's University Guide 2013, with Newcastle University having seven top ten academic programmes within their respective league tables. With the University performing so well, what are the contributing factors to their success?

"We have brilliant and extraordinary people here at INTO Newcastle and I don't mind telling people that!"

John Timney, Head of Recruitment for INTO Newcastle University, believes it's the people that drive up academic performance and overall student satisfaction.

"You can't fail to be impressed by the qualifications and experience both in and out of the classroom."

A shining example of INTO Newcastle's quality personnel is the members of staff who make up the INTO Foundation, Science and Engineering team.

From EAP Coordinators to the Programme Manager, each person brings with them experience, innovation and an appetite that students respond to.

Service over and above the call of duty!

The thought of losing your passport evokes fear into most international students but when that nightmare becomes a reality, it is truly terrifying! Zhang Ying Chen, a student from Shanghai, China studying at INTO Newcastle University, was preparing for the worst when she misplaced her passport days before she was due to fly home for Christmas.

Faced with the prospect of spending the holidays alone and certain that no one would be available to help, Zhang sent a copy of her passport to INTO Admissions on the off chance that someone would pick it up. To her surprise, a helping hand was available to send her an immediate CAS (confirmation of acceptance for studies), which not only saved her from buying a new ticket but also meant she could see her family for the first time in months.

When this story emerged recently, Asha Chuang, Regional Marketing Coordinator for INTO University Partnerships, put a call out for those who had gone that extra mile in helping out one of our students.

"It was Marta [Glinska] and myself [Shonagh Doig] who did this looking back over the records. I was sat at my parent's house in Falkirk uploading the information…how's that for service!"

It's a shame that Tim O'Brien, Director of INTO Knowledge, didn't have this kind of service when he lost his passport before the INTO Staff Conference in April. If you have any tips for Tim on keeping his passport safe, then please feel free to email him with your comments.

Coming up next week...

Annual Agent Survey – SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE!

Now in its fourth year, INTO has released findings from our latest survey of education agents. With 633 respondents covering 48 countries, this is one of the largest surveys of its kind undertaken by any education organisation and offers unique insights into the international education sector.

The findings represent good news for INTO and our partners - and offer compelling insights into market behaviour and long term recruitment success. Unsurprisingly, it is the magic blend of institutional reputation and excellence in service delivery which agents value most highly.

The respondents expressed an overall 94% satisfaction rate with INTO service standards - and 84% agreed INTO's service standards are the best in the sector.

Key findings

  • The INTO agent network is experienced - 85% of organisations with whom we work have been operating for six years or longer and 30% for 16 years or more.
  • INTO's network of partner universities has been ranked as the most attractive by 71% of agent respondents.
  • 94% of agents expressed overall satisfaction with INTO service standards
  • 91% expressed satisfaction with INTO's admissions services - up from 86% in the previous survey.
  • 65% of agents' clients have already decided on their destination country before they visit an agent - yet only 13% of students have firmly decided on the institution
  • Those influencing students' study institution and destination change depending on the level of study. Unsurprisingly, parents are much more influential for pre-tertiary students - 51% of respondents citing parents as the key decision maker for younger students.
  • Postgraduate students are much more independent - 79% of said students themselves were the key decision makers on where and what to study.
  • Response to enquiries, the quality of service from institutional partners and application response times are most important service factors cited by agents.
  • Subject and institutional rankings, location and choice of degree are the most commonly used highlights when counselling students.

Dedicated versions of the survey have been produced for each of our partner universities and are being distributed this week together with a detailed commentary.

INTO China welcomes first Fam trip

The first INTO China familiarisation trip, or Fam as it’s otherwise known, was a true success, giving the opportunity to showcase the three prestigious university partners to regional recruitment team members and centre academics alike.

Rob Munro, Marketing and Recruitment Coordinator, INTO China said, "It was great to showcase our Chinese university partners to regional office staff, explore the accommodation, meet with school and college Deans at each university and experience firsthand what our students will be doing throughout the summer."

China's growing economy and political importance is reflected by the number of students now making it their first-choice destination. INTO believe this is the perfect time to collaborate with universities as they seek to internationalise their academic programmes.

INTO China and our partner universities Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, Beijing Foreign Studies University and Nankai University offer students the opportunity to study a Chinese language course on a leading Chinese university campus. Over 120 students from the US and UK have signed up for this year's summer programme with orientation taking place in June.

The team are also working towards the first INTO China academic programme, which begins this September at Nankai University. The programme itself (MA International Economics and Business) will be the first long-term study cohort available to students with INTO China looking to build relationships with key university partners to offer further study options for prospective students.

Emily Chu, Executive and Development Coordinator for INTO China said, "Each delegate provided enthusiastic and constructive feedback that has been essential in helping us further our appeal to various regions within the INTO recruitment network."

The trip was of equal significance to Omar Ratib, Assistant Recruitment Director for the Middle East and North Africa, who was out celebrating his 'Hen do' (open to both men and women) wearing a premarital panda hat given to him by Stephen Healy, Managing Director for Asia.

Omar celebrated in style on the last evening of the trip with some Peking duck on the banks of a small lake, drinks at the Migas rooftop bar in Beijing and some questionable 'boogying'.

QAA praise INTO Manchester

As a result of its Review for Educational Oversight, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education identified INTO Manchester as having, “comprehensive processes and procedures which provide effective support for students throughout their studies.”

The QAA expressed further confidence in how INTO Manchester manages its responsibilities for the quality and enhancement of the learning opportunities it offers.

Dawn Abbott, Centre Director for INTO Manchester said, "We were delighted with the overall judgements as they provide external confirmation of what we already believed we were doing well. We were pleased that the features of good practice focussed on how we support our students both before and after they arrive, as the voluntary contributions from our students were at the heart of the whole Review process."

In listing other good practices, the QAA praised the number of effective mechanisms INTO Manchester have in place to ensure the quality of teaching and learning is not only being maintained but also enhance:

"Student questionnaires provide valuable evidence to aid the evaluation of teaching and learning. Student satisfaction with the learning experience has increased from 80 per cent in 2009-10 to 93 per cent in 2010-11."

On discussing how INTO Manchester provides effective support for its international students, the report highlighted INTO's reputable support services and the highly trained staff located throughout the UK and abroad:

"Extensive range of valuable processes and procedures are available, both overseas and in the UK, to support students with the cultural and emotional upheaval of studying in another country. Staff and former students are available to answer queries from prospective students, face-to-face, online and through social media."

On summing up the findings, Dawn added that, "it was a great team effort across the Centre that made all the difference plus we were able to count on support from IUP and our awarding body NCUK"
